optical drives stopped working on mdk 10

For some unknown reason, neither my cd-rw nor dvd rom will read or even register that a disk is inserted in the drive anymore. I'm positive that they did function correctly initially because I copied a disk to my home directory from cd. When I insert an audio cd, kscd will appear to be playing the disk, but I get no sound. I know sound works because totem works perfectly on video that I already have stored on my hard disk. I'm using the kde window manager and I don't even get anything to show up when i try to view /mnt/cdrom or /mnt/cdrom2 under konqueror, nautilus, or a terminal window. I have tried with commercial audio cds and data cds to no avail. Can someone please clue me in as to what is going on?
