OpenMandriva lx 4.3 Disabling that internal USB Floppy probes all the time for a possibly inserted disk

Hi there, I just today updated to the recent OpenMandriva 4.3 (rock) and was hoping it would fix the issue I had with 4.2 and really drives me nuts because of its noise : Is it possible to cause Disabling that internal USB Floppy probes all the time for a possibly inserted disk ?

I am even wondering why it constantly looks for an inserted disk. I tried to find the answer in the OpenMandriva documentation and asked in their official forum and got unfortunately replies like "Nobody uses floppy drives anymore" (well, I do) and when I asked if there is no way to disable at least the Floppy to USB Adapter controller somehow (like virtually "unplug" the usb device all I got was a "I don't know").

The floppy disk is internal, so I cannot unplug it.

The perfect solution would be to just make it stop probing but I am also fine with disabling it via USB virtually.

Thanks bunches in advance!

Try appending to linu line in Grub BrokenModules=floppy.

A USB floppy drive uses the USB mass storage driver just like any other USB drive. I still have a USB ZIP drive which basically works the same. The floppy module is just for the legacy floppy drive. I assume if a disk is inserted it works ok?

I assume at one time the drive worked? Maybe try a live version with an older kernel. Floppy drives do fail. The USB to floppy controller would be internal to the drive so disabling it is really not possible.

That's a good idea, I will try that soon, thanks!

It worke4d in Windows 7, 8.1., 10, 11, but never got it to work in OpenMandriva, no.

The controller is not internal to the drive, there was only one USB drive to my knowledge on the market that would be able to be put into a tower case (it's no longer sold), so I went for a legacy internal floppy instead connected to a floppy-to-USB adapter.

Windows luckily not a problem with that and it is connected as "Teac USB UF000x USB Device" under "Floppy Drives" section.

Hi there. By pure luck, I found the answer for the floppy issue today and thought I would update my own question post with the solution:

While searching for a way how to read SMART data from disks, I came across this article: https://linuxopsys.com/topics/test-s...ealth-in-linux

Its suggested GUI tool "Gnome Disks" has a button on top called "Power Off".

This may be a workaround but it's not a solution.

Trying a legacy internal FFD + FFD-to-USB-adapter gives same results here. It has nothing to do with SMART because SMART is only enabled for internal SSDs & HDDs with entries in /etc/smartd.conf. I won't install a GUI or CLI tool to bypass this problem because this isn't a solution but only a workaround. Compiling a kernel with required settings may be a solution but I don't know required settings to solve this problem.

"Don't use the FDD" is neither a workaround nor a solution in this case.

Noting that you have said this is a legacy floppy drive with a floppy to USB adapter, it seems very logical that you would be able to connect the USB when you need the drive and have it unplugged when not needed. That would stop the constant searching for the disk that is your issue and the noise that bothers you.

To me this sounds like something that is built into the USB -- floppy adapter to make loading a disk similar to what it used to be when PCs commonly had floppy drives. We used to insert a disk and the drive powered up to identify and mount the disk then sat idle but ready until the system needed to use the disk.
