Have you tried installing the "nvidia-glx" package with the stock Ubuntu nvidia driver? If that doesn't help then try these drivers in this order, but try the nvidia-glx package first. Also, search on nvidia-glx here, as there have been a few posts about it lately.

Code:
NVIDIA-Linux-x86-173.14.12-pkg1.run
NVIDIA-Linux-x86-173.14.05-pkg1.run
NVIDIA-Linux-x86-177.67-pkg1.run

I could try it but i can't see how it would help..
Do you think that my problem is the driver i downloaded from the nvidia homepage? I would think that the problem is "in my computer" and downloading another driver-source would not help?

Nvida-glx is installed with newest edition.

Excuse my bad English!

The GeForce 4 Ti 4200 will not run with the newest nVidia drivers (100+)..
you MUST use one of the legacy drivers for that nvidia card 96.43.xx

I can't tell from your responses if all you have done is install nvidia-glx
or
if you have actually gone through the how-to step by step following each direction as provided ?????

you really need to give us a bit more to work with..

When i tried to install the nvidia-glx file, my system told me that it was already at the newest version. I had not installed this earlier so it seems that this was, maybe, in one of the updates after the fresh install.

Now, i googled around and found another nvidia-legacy driver on nvidia.com, downloaded this and it installed just fine. Tried to use the xorg-conf option that came with the .run file but this killed my X.

Now i'm reading the Readme file posted on nvidia.com where it tells me how to edit my xorg.conf. But I can't understand my xorg.conf file.

Sorry if you have to stomp things into me, but i'm really noob

My xorg.conf
Code:
Section "Device"
        Identifier "Configured Video Device"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
        Identifier "Configured Monitor"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
        Identifier "Default Screen"
        Monitor "Configured Monitor"
        Device "Configured Video Device"
EndSection
Hope you can make any sense at all of what i'm trying to say, thanks for your help
