Question Ooops! Where is my Kernel?

Hi Folks!

Could someone please tell me how to locate my MDK 9.1 Kernel?
I am trying to install the module for my conexant modem and I get this little lot.

common.mak:11: *** Is the kernel-source package installed? KERNELSRC does not point to a proper directory (/lib/modules/2.4.21-0.13mdk/build). Stop.
make: *** [install] Error 2
error: Bad exit status from /var/tmp/rpm-tmp.4889 (%install)
RPM build errors:
Bad exit status from /var/tmp/rpm-tmp.4889 (%install)

It tries to recompile the kernel but fails.

I can not see anything to do with a kernel in the DIR /usr/src/linux. In fact the linux directory does not exist at all.

Please help

Cheers then !

Usually the /usr/src/linux folder is just a Symbolic Link to a folder.

You might get the most up to date kernel from <a href = 'http://www.kernel.org'>http://www.kernel.org</a>
2.4.20 is the most stable/supported one now.

And then extract to /usr/src folder

Then you can create a link by
ln -s /usr/src/linux-2.4.20 /usr/src/linux

Hope this helps

I'd suggest you stick with MDK's kernels, knowing how they are specifically patched for their distro.
9.1 comes with 2.4.20 anyway, I'm sure.
The simplest answer is: your kernel sources are on your install CD.
Use rpmDrake or Kpackage if you like GUI tools or, rpm -ivh or urpmi to install the pkg from the console.

Hiya!
Thank you for your advice. the kernel installed from the CD is 2.4.21-0.13mdk
I got it with the uname =r command.
Still dont know where to find it though. the path /usr/src/linux does not exist on my system.
Thanks anyway

The kernel and the kernel-sources are 2 different pkgs...
Type rpmdrake is your console, locate kernel-sources from the GUI tool and clic install, it should ask for you to insert the right install CD [...it'll tell you which] and install the pkg and required deps, if any.

Hi guys.

I'm trying to do the same thing on Redhat 9.

I got my modem to work with the kernel version given to me on the Redhat disksk (2.4.20-8). However, I just updated my kernel to 2.4.20-19.9.

I'm trying to install HSF modem drivers by recompiling a source code (unfortunatly, pre-compiled code doesn't exist yet for my kernel). However, when I run RPMBUILD --rebuild, I get the following error message:

common.mak:11: *** Is the kernel-source package installed? KERNELSRC does not point to a proper directory (/lib/modules/2.4.20-19.9/build). Stop.
make: *** [install] Error 2
error: Bad exit status from /var/tmp/rpm-tmp.16622 (%install)

The link /lib/modules/2.4.20-19.9/build points to a folder called /usr/src/linux, but that folder does not exist.

Any assistance on this matter would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
