{NOT VALID} onboard sound does not work

hey all,
my mobo has onboard sound and it doesn't work (at all) with linux. i don't know what brand or name my sound card is (for some reason linux recognizes it as being made by nvidia) and i'm completely unable to get it working, even though i've googled the card name and issue. any suggestions?
cheers,
-sam

you don't know what brand or name of sound card it is but you managed to google the card name and issue? How'd u do that then?

It very likely is an Nvidia soundchip....go forth and download the NForce onboard sound driver from nvidia's webby, run it as root in init3 and (probably) voila!!

or maybe you've just got to turn the volume up with alsa mixer?

Would be nice to know,

1. mobo brand & ident
2. linux flavour & kernel series
3. alsa or oss
4.if you've read the sound part of the installation instructions for your choice of distro

i just searched for onboard sound card at google... do they really differ that much depending on maker? i have a k7 triton series gigabyte motherboard but i dont know what the actual sound card is. i guess i'll repost this with more information or whatever so its easier to reply to.
sorry for wasting your time :(

in a command console log in as root and run
Code:

lspci
the output will list all your PCcomponenets and may just make your life easier.

it probably will be as simple as just running the NForce app and then turn up the software volume though
