On-Board Sound VIAVT8235 in RH 9.0

I've recently installed RH 9.0 and I got an error when Xwindows loads: ARTS info... /dev/dsp can't be opened, soundserver will keep on playing using output null.
lsmod shows that via82cxxx_sound , soundcore , uart401 , ac97_codec and soundcore are loaded.
Permissions 777 on /dev/dsp do not work.
$cat file.wav>/dev/dsp make it sounds.
I've read a lot of stuff on sound probs on this forum. I tried to install ALSA but something went wrong cos modprobe could'n't load the via82xx module created by alsa.(I read in alsa web for via82cxxx that things are not clear in RH 8 with alsa sound).

One more weird thing: Sure the first times I booted RH the message didn't appear. Besides I recompiled a new kernel from 2.4.20-8 (got some probs too with make modules) with sound via82xxx into the kernel and OOOOPS! the first time I booted it I got the sound working. I listened one theme from Paradise Lost rebooted and then got again the same message: /dev/dsp can't be opened.
Any help?
The box is a brand new pc. Perhaps it does not like Paradise Lost ¿?
I have mandrake 9.1 and the soundcard works ok.

Problem solved with the info provided by Hedz:
went to www.opensound.com and installed oss:
WHY CAN'T WE HAVE IT? just sounded great.
now sound is doing fine, perhaps alsa is better but why can't we try it?
thanks to hedz again.
