old presario pcmica, nic?

Hi,

I was just wondering if I could put an old nic in this very old laptop? Like say a old 3com 10base T?

I have quite a limited knowledge of pcmica and since there is only a 56 k modem in it I do not know if it this is possible?

I would like to use a *nix os on it, but don't have dial up and don't want to have to use floppies.

Or is there a modem to nic adapter or something?

Places to get it.

Oh anyone got a distro working on in?
Saw that mandrake 8.2 went on slick but the site is in french.

If it has a pcmcia then a pcmcia nick should work. The only thing to remember is that you need a Type 2 card not a Type 3.

I see that the type 2 are for nics, modems, etc... may I be able to find one that might have a 10bits/s nic and usb 1.1 combination. I do not think this is possible, but since 1.1 usb is only 12 mbits I have to ask.

I also understand that there is a chipset in side these cards. Which ones are the most compatible with linux, I know realtek and intel were the best choices with windows.

Ok I see from my first post it sounds like I was smoking crack, I have a compaq 1220 notecinderblock. Anyway, Looking for this type II nic on ebay and haven't the foggiest what to search.

If I search pcmcia then I get what seem to be very new network adapters I think they are cardbus, which I think is not the ones I want.

I found one which is a xircom or something like that that is manufactured by intel which I think would be good at least for linux support or no. But I am having a hard time knowing whether these newer ones will work with this old box.

Like would anything that says 10/100 nic be the wrong kind of card, wrong as in will not work with the machine or as in hooking high speed to a pentium 1 w/Win XP

Like would a new linksys ethenet card work in here as long as it was thin/thick enough?

Any good old legendary cards? Or maybe a search pharse?
