Old computer, new board and linux

Im very new to linux and computers, so sorry if this is a dumb question.
I was given an old Compaq Pentium 2 that does'nt work and I would like to upgrade it to a Pentum 4.
Im pretty sure it needs a new mother board so I wanted to know if theres any compatibility issues with mother boards or components of and linux.
I do know that I need a new power supply with the new board.
This is just a tinkering project, I plan on buying a 64 bit box at the begginning of next year but until then its just a laptop in the house and it does double duty. Not a big deal but with everyone in the house using it, Im not getting as much quaulity time with linux as Id like.
Any and all info and links very much appreciated.

Txabuzr - Welcome to LQ! There are no dumb questions -- everyone here used to be a newbie.

Anyway, as you may be aware, the pin configuration of the Pentium II is radically different than the pin configuration of a P4, so you will not be able to simply drop a new P4 chip onto a P2 mobo. Your assumption is correct - if you want to upgrade to a P4, you will need a new mobo. As for compatibility issues, I would recommend the HCL here at LQ. It is an awesome resource that lists a lot of specific equipment, with comments from your fellow LQ'ers as to how well it works with Linux.

Lastly, if you are in the market for purchasing new equipment, I cannot say enough good things about NewEgg *Excellent* prices and awesome service. You can search by either the manufacturer or the type of equipment you want to buy, and they are right in your backyard. Seriously, I've purchased 3 complete systems from Newegg, and could not say enough good things about them.

Anyway, please post back with any followup questions. You are making an excellent choice to go with Linux -- J.W.
