Old ATI card in Suse 9.1
 
A friend of mine gave me an old PII 450 computer to play around with, and I'm trying to install SUSE 9.1 (professional) on it. I am having a bit of a problem with my video card though. Everything installs fine, and I can get the resolution up to 1024 x 768. However, the computer won't let me put the colours up above 8 bit.

I am certain that the card should work at that resolution, because it did before in College Linux. What I had done is installed CL on the system with a different card, had the resolution at that setting, and then changed the cards. Doing this, it worked fine with College Linux at 1024x768 in 24bit colour.

YAST recognized the card as ATI 210888GX [Mach64 GX]. Is there anything I can do improve the colours on my system, aside from getting a different video card? I can't go back to the old one, either, as I've given it away.

Bump. Any ideas at all? Or should I just bite the bullet and try to find another card?

What is the video driver setting in your XF86Config? You may be using a generic driver, and if you were to substitute "ati" that may solve the issue. If you search within synecdoche's post, you'll see that exact reference. -- J.W.
