Odd GLX error in x86_64 FC5 with nVidia

I've come across what seems to be an unusual error with GLX while trying to install the latest nVidia driver (1.0-8774) on my GeForce FX 5500 in Fedora Core 5. I'm using kernel 2.6.17-1.2187 and the nvidia driver seems to install and work perfectly, with both nVidia's tarball and livna's RPM. The module loads and X runs, splash screen and all.

The problem is when I try to run glxgears. It seems to work, producing FPS somewhere in the thousands. However, when I try to quit glxgears, the entire system freezes. I can't even switch to the console; I have to do a hard reboot. I've tried running glxinfo, but that just makes the computer freeze straight away.

I'm running one of the new Intel Pentium D dual-core processors, in case that has anything to do with the problem. Any help at all would be appreciated, as I've searched these forums and haven't found anything like this.

From here:

Quote:
If you are seeing severe stability problems and you are using a Linux 2.6 SMP kernel on a system with multiple processors (or processor cores) in combination with more than one GPU, please search the output of `dmesg` for the presence of the message below after the system has just been started:

PCI: Using MMCONFIG

If this message is present, please boot the system with the pci=nommconf kernel parameter and check if the stability problems continue to reproduce.

Please note: if you have checked the above items and continue to experience stability problems, please submit a bug report (see this link for information on how to submit bug reports).

Code:
$ dmesg | grep MMCONFIG
PCI: Not using MMCONFIG.
Hm. I think I should send a bug report.

Thanks.
