NVidia Ti4800 on Ubuntu

I successfully installed Ubuntu 6.10 on this system after several false starts with other distros, and am impressed in general with its operation. However, I cannot get my ASUS 9480 128MB (NVidia Geforce Ti4800) video card to function correctly. In Linux, it tops out at 1024 by 768, but I know both the card and the monitor support higher resolutions. I would prefer to run the card at 1152 by 864 or 1200 by 960/1024. How do I make it run at full capacity?

Have you gone through the nvidia driver install yet? It doesn't install by default (I'm still not sure why this is the case, but... it is). If you've not done the driver install yet, follow these instructions:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Latest_Nvidia_Dapper

Note: I've never had "Method 1" work, I've always had to compile the driver myself i.e. "Method 2"(which is pretty easy these days - follow the instructions).

Once you've got it installed & you restart X, go to

Applications > System Tools > Nvidia Settings

to change resolution. Be sure to "Save Configuration to file" (though you may have to launch nvidia-settings as root or with sudo for the save to overwrite /etx/X11/xorg.conf)

test your graphics acceleration with "/usr/lib/xscreensaver/pulsar -delay 0 -fps" You should get fps of > 1500. If it's down near 100, the driver is not working.
