nvidia slaughters ati in these linux benchmarks
 

I'm posting this for those who come with similar questions to mine in the future, I'm a UT2004 Windows XP gamer with an ATI 9800Pro. I was searching for benchmarks in linux with UT2004 between ATI and Nvidia because I am ditching windows on my desktop for Gentoo.

According to an official site which I can't recall the location of at this moment, ATI video cards won't play UT because the so-called Linux driver from ATI.com and from X.org don't do actual 3D acceleration like the nVidia Linux driver does for their cards. You can go for DRI which gives you better and real 3D acceleration that ATI can't write for themselves. (what?!) And so whatever site I see that says that ATI is the tortoise I will believe them because I have (4) ATI Radeon 9200's. I also gave my 'old' 64MB Radeon to my brother thinking that times had changed in 6 years since ATI "fixed" 3D for M$. I thought wrong because ATI can't get anything right it seems or they just don't care about the Open Source community which is their loss. More people are realizing that nVidia is for the Open Source world and ATI is for... well I can't think what they are for. :D


Oh yes I can.... running VGA-style 2D "accelerated" graphics! (w00 h00) :P

(I paid $99.99 x4 for my Radeon's.... bleh... no Linux 3D from ATI.com still?!?!?!)

The X.Org 'radeon' driver does not give 3D acceleration for newer chipsets (RV300+)

As far as I understand though, the proprietary 'fglrx' driver does provide 3D acceleration (Well, UT, UT2003 and Doom3 play with them at least). Can you please try to provide the article that states otherwise, as I'd be very interested in seeing it (a quick search on Google hasn't turned it up yet)?
