Nvidia mcp51 alc883 problems

I have an Nvidia mcp51 alc883 onboard sound in my desktop computer. I am using high quality 2.0 headphones so I don't bug my room mate and I get to listen to what I want (drowns out everything else to). Anyway, on linux with alsa and oss (not emulated) with opensuse 10.3, fedora 8, ubuntu 7.10 and slackware 12.00 the sound sounds terrible. Voices sound like their underwater and the music sounds like the crests are cut off. The voices are also way too low in volume. I updated to alsa 1.0.15 in all distros nothing is working. Other than sound problems linux has been a great experience, .
