NVIDIA installs, but no display.

Hmm. Just installed Slack 9 with dropline gnome. Tried to load the latest Nvidia drivers, 4xxx soemthing or other. The install goes fine. When I startx, I can HEAR it starting up, all the sounds play, etc, but the monitor is totally blank, and eventually goes into off mode. I thought maybe it was the new drivers. So I downloaded the 3123 and rebooted. Installed those, same issue. X runs fine with the default VESA XF86Config, but a lot of things are disabled.

I have tried:

- double checking the monitors refresh and sync ranges
- loading and not loading the GLX module
- tried different resolutions and color depths
- oh, also I have tried a different monitor, a Viewsonic A75f

Card is GF4Ti 4200 128MB
Monitor is Viewsonic P95F+

Anyone got any ideas??

Did you try going to /lib/modules/(kernel version)/kernel/drivers/video (or wherever nvidia.o installed) and doing:

insmod nvidia.o

Run the nv_check script and correct any errors it detects.
