Nvidia Gforce2 video card problems.

Hi

Im using mandrake 10
I have a new graphics card its called a "GIGABYTE - GeForce 2 Pro, GV-GF2010" its got 64mb DDR and sVideo out.

I have tried to install it on my PIII 600 mandrake machine. i plugged it into the AGP slot insted of the card i was using and used the mandrake hardware auto config tool at startup to swap the settings over. i speficified an nvidia driver called "Nvidia GeForce 2 generic" when i tested the setup it would load x and i can see the 'X' cursor but there are ugly vertical lines appearing all over the place and then disappearing and appearing elsewhere on the screen. It stays stuck here i cant get out using Atl+Ctrl+Backspace, Ctrl+C or other keyboard quits i have to push reset.

It doesnt seem to be a resolution problem cos i tryed this way using different resolutions and there was no difference.

suspecting it might be the card and not linux i installed MS windows 98se (and followed the instructions in the cards manual for installing its drivers and software) and a simular problem appeared with the dirty vertical lines + windows didnt think the drivers i installed were working. i tried re-installing the drivers several times. before installing the cards drivers it appeared to be working fine no vertical lines etc.

sick of windows i re-installed mandrake and just like with windows before installing the display interface it was working nicely (with the installation xwindow GUI) without any lines but once i get upto the point of installing the nvidia drivers and testing i get the annoying x-window screen with the cursor no windows and some lines blinking at me. it stays stuck here till i reboot the computer. if i dont test and just try and use them it just starts with the annoying xwindow sceen mentioned before and stays there.

help me!
cheers.
Ben.

Have you tried the official nVidia drivers? Is the rivafb module loaded?

Hello.

Sorry this is so much later than i when i started this thread iv been busy finishing up everything for the year and to a degree advoiding this issue.

Iv gone to nvidia and used their drivers.

using the newest driver "6629" i had a few problems the first being during install when it was having problems cos the kernel source mandrake had installed at install was the 2.4 kernel while it was running the 2.6 kernel. Then i found i had to load the nvidia module my self using "modprobe nvidia". Once done and after editing the xorg config driver option "nv" to read "nvidia" i could "startx" without getting any errors but it come up with a blank screen and sticks there eventually breaking out in horizontal lines but never doing anyting helpful. This problem sounded like the same some other people have been complaining about on the nvidia forums the end of that was someone announcing that its a problem with the 6629 driver and it will be considered in the next driver release in the mean time to go back to using the previous driver "6111".

.....and so i have downloaded the 6111 driver but when i try and install this it errors out (during the installation as it builds the kernel module.

The ERROR is:
Code:

ERROR: Unable to build the NVIDIA kernel module.
I thought it may be older than the kernel i am using so i downloaded a version of the 6111 driver that was patched to use the 2.6 kernel but i get the same error in the same place.

Can anybody help me please.

By-the-way I am now using mandrake 10.1 official download.
I also tried to put windows XP on this computer to see if i could get the graphics card to work on that but after installing the cards drivers on XP and rebooting i get a blue screen of death at startup.

the rivafb module is detected. iv tried starting x both ignoring rivafb's existance and by "modprobe --remove rivafb" but either way the same black screen appears.

thanks.
Ben.
