Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660 Ti , G-Sync, and FreeSync
This is an FYI post for someone who may have an Nvidia graphic card which uses G-Sync and a monitor that uses FreeSync. It appears that that Nvidia just recently upgraded some of their graphic cards so that they can use FreeSync. (I'm using Mint 20.1 as the OS.)
Whether this has been an issue of concern to anyone is not know to me. What happened is that I had bought a new computer system (including monitor) that could do 4K without a graphic card. Everything went well, until ... . For Christmas, I bought a flight simulator. It crashed. Turned out it required (in small print) a graphic card. Ordered the GeForce GTX 1660 Ti. Solved the problem.
However, in solving the problem I began to re-examine my monitor display settings. I noticed a reference to "FreeSync". I wondered what that was so I looked it up. In doing that I discovered that it was one type of video syncing method and that "G-Sync" was the other. Turns out that my monitor used "FreeSync". I immediately thought incompatibility, bummer. With continued searching, it turns out that some Nvidia graphic cards can now use "FreeSync". Turning on that capability was easy to do. See the attached screenshot, look for the blue rectangle (Blue rectangle did not show-up when the file was opened with Firefox). In the X-Server Display Configuration tab, click on the box "Allow G-Sync on monitor not validated as G-Sync compatible." to enable that capability.
Does it work? I assume so. I do not have a video game that is so demanding that stresses out the graphic card and/or the monitor. The video card runs great.
Another learning experience from this, is that the video card did significantly improve movie image quality even though the motherboard is rated as being 4K compatible.
