If you've got Mandrake 10.1, it works well afaik. Or you could use a more recent version, like 10.2 or 2006. If you want to upgrade the version of X it's up to you. It might be best to get a Mandriva/Mandrake package though. Which package did you upgrade Mandrake 10.1 with? I don't know much about Ubuntu. Mandriva is very user friendly, but I foumd I grew bored with it after about 6 months. If you really want to learn how the system works, then Slackware is best. Difficult to begin with, but simple after that. Lots of guides available. Stable. A lot of software installed.
