Nvidia FX 5200 PCI Card (System bus / DDR Ram Question)
 

Hi,

I have an Intel Celeron 1.3 Ghz processor with a 100Mhz system bus.
(Old and slow I know).The board only takes SDRAM.

My AGP slot is damaged, so I'm looking into buying a Nvidia FX 5200 for PCI slot. It has 128Mb of DDR Ram.

My question is, will a board that has a system bus of 100Mhz and takes only SDRAM, be able to run this graphics card.

Yes, it should but you will have limited performance. The FSB (front side bus) is 133 MHz and your PCI bus is 33 MHz. GeForceFX is not as powerful as GeForce 4. Also GeForceFX are very noisy.

How noisy, the first hard disk in this PC is already louder than a JCB digger.
I could do with quiter components.

Just how much performance would I lose compared with the AGP 8x version of this card, running with DDR Ram and a system bus off 433Mhz?

AGP 8X is 2128 MB/s.
PCI is 133 MB/s.

See the difference. Do not set your resolution to high and your depth to high. You probably want to go with 1024 X 768 at 16 bit depth. Expect poor 3D performance.

If you have an unused 5.25 bay you can put your hard drive there with a noise reducing hardware such as Zalman's ZM-2HC1. It has rubber sides to dampen the vibrations of the hard drive and it has a heat pipe to cool the hard drive. The noise could be the fans too. Use rubber or speaker dampening material and place it between the fans and the case.

GeForceFX is noisy at around 40 to 50 decibals depending on the work load.

I thought your FSB is 133 MHz. Stop confusing us.

I do have a 133MHz system bus, not i was wondering how much I would lose compared with a PC with a 433MHz system bus, and AGP 8x, and DDR Ram.

Tp help me decide weather to get a new board/CPU and an AGP card or to simply get the far cheaper option of a PCI graphics card.

Is my onboard graphics a better option for now?

Intel 815eg on board card. 32Mb ram.

There is no such thing as 433 MHz bus (I wish). You are getting confused on the speed of the video card and the speed between the computer memory to CPU. AGP speed is 66 MHz. The video card's bus is seperate than the computer system. The video card needs this bandwidth to handle massive amounts of data. Graphics takes vast bandwidth and storage to make motion fluid or smooth.

Speed between your CPU and memory is 133MHz. The speed of the PCI bus is 33 MHz. AMD processors uses DDR technics to move double the data rate at the given speed. AMD Athlon XP FSB speed is 200 MHz. It will seem like its getting a 400 Mhz FSB but its really going at 200 Mhz. Intel Pentium 4 uses the same technic but they send data four times per clock signal. If a Pentium 4 is clocked at 200 MHz, it will seem that its going at 800 Mhz. The reasons why these latest processors are doing this because its hard on the designer to construct motherboards with 800 Mhz and massive heat problems.

The i815 graphics card will be awful. Much slower than using a PCI graphics card. If you play games a lot get the latest motherboard. If you do not have a budget, go with Athlon 64. Linux can run on it with some fine tuning.
