nVidia drivers on debian XF86Config-4 locked??
to install nvidia drivers on debian you must do it the debian way (i wish you didnt have to)
but i found a great guide at ive pretty much got all the way through it and have sucessfully buit and installed the kernel module i have installed the nVidia user-space libraries all that remains for me to do is to update my XF86Config-4 file nVidia provide a tool for doing this and it can be run with dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86. however when i try this i get the error /var/cache/debconf/config.dat is locked by another process i am a newbie to linux and i do not know how to figure out why this file is locked. i think it may be because i am running xwindow session, if this is so how do i stop xwindow from running and get into terminal only (id quite like to know the answer to that too:)) |
dont worry about this thread i fixed it myself
it was indeed because xserver was running and i figured out that etc/init.d/gdm stop kills the GNOME GUI, if anyone knows the correct way of doing this i would love to know |
