I'm running Suse 8.1, and I have an vid card w/ an nvidia geforce 2 chip. i downloaded the drivers from nvidia and compiled and installed them. i also edited the XF86Config file to reflect the changes. however, whenever i start X, the system locks up. I'm using KDe 3.0.3 as the wm and when the nimbus sans font loads, it kills the system; i have to hit the reset button. yet, if i run x as root (Suse's root doesn't use the same prettiness as the regular users) it works fine. now my question is, what is causing this?

at the root prompt -> ldconfig
reboot
at the root prompt -> /usr/X11R6/bin/switch2nvidia_glx

I tried ldconfig initially, but it didn't work. So I tried out switch2nvidia_glx, but it didn't help either. I've noticed that it only locks up when antialiased fonts are shown on the screen. I've run startx from the console and once X has started and before KDE has begun loading I switch to another console. When I do that, KDE starts up (I hear the startup sound) but when I switch back to console 7 (X's) the fonts become smudged and the system dies.
