nvidia driver not working

Running Linux Mint 10.

Installed a new geforce GT520 and I can't get the proprietary driver working.

I ran the "additional drivers" utility and it says the driver is installed.

I run the Nvidia X server Settings utility and it says I'm not running the nvidia drivers.

Did a xserver restart and system restart and also booted in recovery mode.

Also ran "sudo nvidia-xconfig" and this is the xorg.conf file that got generated.

Code:
# nvidia-xconfig: X configuration file generated by nvidia-xconfig
# nvidia-xconfig: version 260.19.06 (buildmeister@builder101) Mon Sep 13 04:59:45 PDT 2010

Run lsmod and see what video drivers are loaded. If you want, post the output for me.

Ran lsmod. It shows "nvidia" loaded but "Used by" 0.

I downloaded and manually installed Nvidia's latest driver. It appears to work.

I marked this as solved but it my solution might better be classified as a work-around.

How did you try installing the driver the first time?

Previously I used the utilities that are distributed with the Mint Linux distro.

IIRC Mint uses jockey to control the drivers.

The reason why the GT520 wouldnt work with the mint hardware dirvers tool, and why you got 'nvidia driver is installed, you are not using the driver' is because the nvidia drivers in mint 10 are to old.

You drivers were version 260.19.06, the GT520 needs 270.41.06 or higher to work.

You probably could have used a PPA to get access to the newer drivers with the hardware drviers tool instead of manually installing the nVidia drivers.
