nVidia driver crapped, uninstalled, now X won't start

I had an ATI card but I hate ATI. I bought an nVidia 9500GT and installed the driver from nVidia's website and the second screen kept turning off and on (usually off) at random. So I installed the driver from the Restricted Drivers manager. Rebooted. Works great! Rebooted again, now X won't start. I changed nothing. The primary monitor is turned on, the secondary is in sleep mode. I get a black screen on the primary and can't do anything. I can terminal in from another machine.

I tried doing sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg, but that didn't help. I uninstalled the nVidia (and ATI) drivers and that didn't help. It won't even let me start in low-graphics mode.

I try installing nvidia-glx-177 from apt in the command line but it keeps giving me an error:
Code:
dpkg: error processing /var/cache/apt/archives/nvidia-glx-177_177.80-0ubuntu2_amd64.deb (--unpack):
trying to overwrite `/usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so', which is also in package xserver-xorg-core
...
Errors were encountered while processing:
 /var/cache/apt/archives/nvidia-glx-177_177.80-0ubuntu2_amd64.deb
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)
That libglx.so file doesn't exist.

I'm running Ubuntu Intrepid 64-bit.

Thanks for your help!

if ubuntu boot in fail safe or what ever it is single mode for the telinet one witch actually run level 3 1/2 lol. drop to root . and type nvidia-xconfig . if you are doing this to use compiz-fusion. trust me I set up so many ubuntu 3d desktop. but hey it only took me a few minutes using Slackware. if for some reason nvidia-xconfig does not work that means you un installed the program. or you are using xgl-server and they do not mix because nvidia has it built in and att has to have it for 3d acceleration . if all goes well type telinit 4 and booting in to gooyeeeeeeeeeeee gui

And this is all that's in my xorg.conf:

Code:
Section "Device"
        Identifier "Configured Video Device"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
        Identifier "Configured Monitor"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
        Identifier "Default Screen"
        Monitor "Configured Monitor"
        Device "Configured Video Device"
EndSection
And I found this odd:
Code:
PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND
5853 root 20 0 333m 3752 2636 R 100 0.1 159:00.69 Xorg

that's all that is in your xorg.conf? No screen resolution settings, card drivers, etc?

I know nvidia will sometimes make backups of your xorg.conf, so check if there some some. Try some of them.

Code:
(II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions//libdbe.so
(II) Module dbe: vendor="X.Org Foundation"
	compiled for 1.5.2, module version = 1.0.0
	Module class: X.Org Server Extension
ABI class: X.Org Server Extension, version 1.1
(II) Loading extension DOUBLE-BUFFER
(II) LoadModule: "glx"

(II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions//librecord.so
(II) Module record: vendor="X.Org Foundation"
	compiled for 1.5.2, module version = 1.13.0
	Module class: X.Org Server Extension
ABI class: X.Org Server Extension, version 1.1
(II) Loading extension RECORD
(II) LoadModule: "dri"

(II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions//libdri.so
(II) Module dri: vendor="X.Org Foundation"
	compiled for 7.4.0, module version = 1.0.0
ABI class: X.Org Server Extension, version 1.1
(II) Loading extension XFree86-DRI
(II) Scanning /usr/share/xserver-xorg/pci directory for additional PCI ID's supported by the drivers
(II) Matched nv from file name nv.ids
(==) Matched nv for the autoconfigured driver
(==) Assigned the driver to the xf86ConfigLayout
(II) LoadModule: "nv"
nvidia will also add in stuff like "dri" and "glx" modules, and other settings which are to be used with compositing, so like compiz and beryl. Try taking those out. Also, on my xorg.conf, it's using the "nvidia" driver instead of the "nv"...

and you have the latest nvidia drivers you say?

I'm not an X expert at all though, just trying to throw out some suggestions. I asked for the xorg.log because I know sometimes you can get really obvious error messages in there. might also want to try this: http://www.ubuntugeek.com/dual-monit...th-nvidia.html

Yes, that's all you get after running the dkpg-reconfigure.

I think this might be one of the "obvious" errors you were talking about:

(WW) Warning, couldn't open module glx
(II) UnloadModule: "glx"
(EE) Failed to load module "glx" (module does not exist, 0)
(II) LoadModule: "freetype"

But I don't know why it's trying to load that because I don't have any driver specified in the xorg.conf file. I should just try to kick up in low-graphics mode. Should. Right...

But I can't install the glx driver due to the apt error I'm getting above. So I am at a en pass.

When I have the chance, I'm going to do add the following to my xorg.conf:

driver "vesa"

I read that in another forum as a way to get into low graphics mode. I'm just at work and only have command line access right now. :c)
