Nvidia Driver and Kernel trouble

I did check out the search with no luck as well as the FAQ but that is for an older driver.

I went to www.nvidia.com and went to their driver section. I still haven't found nvchooser.sh so I downloaded both the AMD64 and the IA32 drivers. Now here's the problem. First, I tried the AMD driver since I have an AMD CPU. I did...

CTRL ALT F1
logged in as root
telinit 3
went to the directory of the 2 downloads
tarred the kernel and the GLX files
went to the new NVIDIA_kernel directory
make install

ERROR:
At that step I hit a brick wall. It said it was compiling the NVIDIA kernel with a compiler different from the one used to compile the current running kernel. What gives? It also mentioned rpm files but there are none listed on nvidia.com for the AMD64. Is this right?

------------------------------------------------
I then tried IA32. This came as a .run file. I did...

CTRL ALT F1
logged in as root
telinit 3
went to the root directory where I saved it
sh ./driver.run
Hit Accept, blah, blah

ERROR:
This one mentioned no precompiled kernel interface and it was unable to fine kernel header files. The whole FTP download thing failed.

-------------------------------------------------

Any ideas? I got WineX3 downloaded and installed and tried to load up some CS on a FAT32 partition because it is already installed under WinXP Pro. Problem is my mouse stays an hourglass and I can't click on anything at all. Thinking a true nvidia driver will help out.

I looked again on the nvidia site and I don't even see any rpms there.

My PC info is in my sig and my distro is RH9 using the 2.4.20-13.9 kernel.

install the kernel source from your redhat 9 cd#3 i believe, then start the compiling again, it should be fine

Well, the the only thing I have done kernel wise is get an autoupdate from redhat networks which upgraded my kernel. This is odd.

What's the name of that rpm on the 3rd disk? Also, can I run it from within X?

The AMD64 driver is for the new Opteron. That's why that didn't work. IA32 is correct as AMD 32-bit processors are compatible with Intel Architecture (I think).

I use Mandrake9.1 and the kernel source file was something like:

kernel-source.[version number].mdk.i586.rpm

Yours will probably be something like

kernel-source.2.4.20-13.9.rh9.i386.rpm

or something similar. Can you do a search for "kernel-source" in the RPM manager or something?

BTW for nvidia / linux drivers, they have their own forum and you may get better help there.

Try this link:

When you did the update did you also choose kernel-devel.2-4.20.13-9

This is where your headers are located. If this doesn't bring up this choice go to freshrpms and download the kernel-devel rpm that matches your kernel.

Good Luck
