After long and tedious unsuccessful measures attempting to get my ATI Radeon 7000/VE card to work with my Slackware 10.2 box, I have decided to go with Nvidia. Now I really do love the picture that ATI puts out, (even with 2d in my linux box) but the stress and fustration that it put me through I need to change it up.
My current ATI is a Powercolor Radeon 7000 with 32mb of DDR Ram with TV Out, and I paid $40 for it.
If it is at all possible I would like an equivalent Nvidia (but I am willing to upgrade) that is hassle free.
What I would like to know is your opinions on which nvidia card I should get. Primary motive is to be hassle free, but I do still need tv out and want 3d graphics.
A GeForce6 6200 will work if you are on a tight budget. I do not recommend wasting money on GeForceFX (aka GeForce5). nVidia has made any GeForce7 7200 models yet. People said that GeForce7 has almost the same quality as ATI Radeon cards.
Stupid me. There was one huge detail I forgot to mention about my ATI Video Card. It's PCI. I don't know if GeForce 6 cards come in PCI at all but if you could further direct me I would appreciate it. Sorry for the misinformation.
nymusicman, a GeForce4 like GeForce4 420 or MX4000. A 128 MB version will be better because it will not overload the PCI bus.

1. Will the GeForce4 be completely painless with a linux system?
2. What do you think about the GeForce2 cards. The ones at newegg seem pretty comparable (if not better) to what I have? And would these have an equally painless setup?
The reason I'm asking about the GeForce2 cards is that I noticed they have composite out, not S-Video out. Not that it makes that much of a difference, my tv accepts both, however i did finally just find a 50ft composite video wire after months of looking for that. However like I said, that doesn't matter (mostly because I found the wire for under $5 at big lots), I would be willing to upgrade to S-video, I was just asking.
Just a note about the Geforce 2, those cards aren't supported by the current linux drivers. Older versions of the drivers work fine with them and I believe Nvidia still has "milestone" releases available ie. releases just before the one where support was removed for a particular device. Just Google
I know that it won't seem like this question applies to my video card upgrade and I'm sorry if this doesn't belong in this discussion. But this will affect the card I choose. Does anybody know what the longest s-video cable you can buy is, and even possibly where to get it from.
For the best S-Video quality about 6 feet (1.8288 meters). You can push it to 12 feet (3.6476 meters) but with reduce quality. The PCI video cards that I have seen has both composite and S-Video connectors.

I'm not really worried about perfect quality (like I said right now I'm using a 50 ft composite cable.) But would you be able to post the PCI cards that have both that you have seen. Thanks.
