NVidia assistance required

Hi. After abandoning SuSe for about 6 months, Ive decided to man up to open source and give this promising OS another shot. Unfortunately, I lost most of what little knowledge I had about how to play around with the Console. Unfortunately, I blew an ATI video card that I had. I bought a e-GeForce FX 5500 PCI 128 MB Video card. I went to find the drivers for this video card and tried to install the NVidia graphics standard on Yast however, either because I didnt know how to configure it afterward, it didn't seem to affect my system. I'm trying to install the FreeBSD x86 driver, yet the instructions leave me somewhat confused. Instructions go as follows:

______________________________________________________________________________

Chapter 1. Installing the NVIDIA Driver
______________________________________________________________________________

This installation procedure will likely be simplified further in the future,
but for the moment you will need to download the NVIDIA FreeBSD Driver Set
archives from the NVIDIA website, extract them to a temporary location of your
choice, and run the following from the root of the extracted directory
hierarchy:

% make install

This will compile the NVIDIA FreeBSD kernel module, install it, and kldload
it. It will also remove any conflicting OpenGL libraries, and install the
NVIDIA OpenGL libraries. The '/dev/nvidia' device files will be created
(unless the system is using devfs), and your '/boot/loader.conf' file will be
updated to automatically load the NVIDIA kernel module on boot, as well as the
Linux ABI compatiability module should you not have it compiled into your
kernel.
_______________________________________________________________________________

Unfortunately, when i go to try to "% make install" this happens in the Console:

Makefile:20: *** missing separator. Stop.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

I'm sorry, are you trying to install on FreeBSD or SuSe?

I'm trying to install FreeBSD. I'm also open to suggestions to get my GeForce FX 5500 working smoothly, however, i want to see if installing FreeBSD will do the trick.

Install the drivers using ports. Go to /usr/ports/x11/nvidia-driver and as root, do "make install clean".

Ok, whenever i try to install the driver, it says
ERROR: You appear to be running an X server; please exit X before installing. For further details, please see the
section INSTALLING THE NVIDIA DRIVER in the README available on the Linux driver download page at
www.nvidia.com.

Instructions are supposed to be like so:

After you have downloaded NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-7167-pkg1.run,
begin installation by exiting X, cd'ing into the directory containing
the downloaded file, and run:

sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-7167-pkg1.run

The .run file is a self-extracting archive. When the .run file is
executed, it extracts the contents of the archive, and runs the contained
`nvidia-installer` utility, which will walk you through installation of
the NVIDIA driver.

Real dumb question: How do I exit as X?

Well, depends on if you are using a display manager or not.
Do you boot directly to X? If so you will need to turn of your display manager, then [ctrl]-[alt]-[backspace] will shut down X. If you don't turn off the display manager then X will just start right back up.

Thx Bulliver. I face another problem.
I installed the NVidia Driver, but get this when I try to run the required command: "Sax2 -m 0=nvidia"

____________________________________________________________________________________________

SaX: initializing please wait...
SaX: ups lost card during probing... abort

____________________________________________________________________________________________

My monitor does blink during this process, but all that ends up happening is that the command aborts. Any ideas?

Fixed it. Instead of "Sax2 -m 0=nvidia" I put in "Sax2 -c 1 1=nvidia"
As it turns out, I have 2 graphics cards that are being read by my system, one that's built into the motherboard and the other is my NVidia PCI card.

I thought you were installing Nvidia on FreeBSD, hence my answer above.
