nvidia and HDTV...
 

Hi all,
picking up my new television tonight, and it occured to me that i might be able to do some cool new things for watching movies with my box.

the set is the philips 30PW8402/37 30" widescreen hd.

it has component, composite, svideo, and hdmi inputs on it.
i was wondering if it was possible to connect my main machine to this tv and get some decent resolutions (above using an s-video for instance).

distro is FC2.
vid card is: BFG fx5600 ultra (it has standard rgb out, plus a dvi for a flat panel monitor, and an s-video output as well).

anyone have any ideas on getting my box to work on the hdtv?
i am wondering if there is perhaps some way to use the dvi and convert it to hdmi for the tv?

You can use either S-Video or HDMI. For both connectors you need to read nVidia's documentation on TV out. I have read and heard that HDMI is backwards compatible with DVI, but you need to find a cable that has DVI and HDMI connectors. It is possible that an HDTV can recieve almost the same resolutions that a computer monitor can handle because the X Window System is very versatile.

BTW, HDTV is still new and expensive. By 2010, HDTV should be worldwide.

Thanks for the reply. I wanted to avoid converting the signal to NTSC timings, and to take advantage of the pure digital output from the dvi connector, to the hdmi connector on the hdtv (hdmi is supposed to be backwards compatible).

I guess I was just hoping that someone had the geek fortitude to try this out already and to see if it works. I know they are still expensive, but some people do have them already...

oh well, thanks anyway. i'll try it out and post the results back here as soon as i find something out a little more solid...

HDTV tuner card
 

pcHDTV makes a HDTV tuner card for Linux. Pair it up with an nVidia geForce4 (or better) card and you can have hardware decoding and video out. This is great for people without HDTV receivers and you could make it work with a HDTV, PAL, or NTSC TV depending on the video card you pair with it. I personally would try to get a video card with DVI to get progressive scan for a HDTV screen and use s-video or a composite out for a PAL or NTSC television.

The latest nVidia driver (6629) has predefine settings for HDTV. Read nVidia's document for the latest driver.
