I recently purchased an MSI NX8400GX and the graphics drivers installer wants to know where my kernel sources are. Only problem is, I don't know where they are or how to find them/install them.
They aren't in /usr/src/linux (in fact, the directory doesn't exist) and "apt-getting" for kernel-source tells me:
Package kernel-source is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
I'm using an HD install of Knoppix 5.1 and I just upgraded all my packages and stuff. uname -r says I'm using kernel 2.6.19.
If anyone can help me get these drivers installed, I'd really appreciate it. I'll gladly grab more information if I need to. Thanks.
Okay, I installed the 2.6.22-1-686 one and it seemed to work fine. However, I apparently need to configure it. (?) I'm a bit familiar with configuring and installing stuff from tars, but I'm not so familiar with this kind of thing for kernels. So, how do I configure this thing? Or do I need one that matches my current kernel version for it to work?
No, you're right. I'm a bit confused because I would assume that Knoppix is using the Debian repositories and Debian has 2.6.18 and 2.6.21. Have you checked whether there isn't a kernel update available (apt-get update - this will update ALL that can be updated on your system - or apt-get update linux-image)?
Don't use the 2.6.22 - this will most definitely NOT work unless it's the kernel source you got.
I'm starting to think this is going to be much more trouble than it should be...
A couple of sites I found say that the DVD version has the linux-headers installed. I have a Knoppix DVD, but I used the CD version because my primary drive only takes CD's. I suppose if I just find some way to boot using a floppy into the DVD Knoppix, I could install that to HD and not have this problem. So, now how do I go about making such a floppy?
Really sure you want Knoppix? I mean, Knoppix was never meant to be installed to hard drive. Making the thing installable was pretty much a second thought with the builders (and they have themselves repeatedly advised against installing it to disk). I'm sure you'll get it to work - eventually - but why take the trouble when it could be so much easier? Have you considered Debian? Knoppix is simply a small Debian clone after all. And it can be installed from cd as well. Or Ubuntu, which is based on Debian too and which is available as an installable liveCD? Ubuntu is probably better suited to begin exploring Linux but either would be great.
Good idea. the net install is extremely convenient even though it may take a bit longer to install. Still fast, though.
When you're done, draw up your /etc/apt/sources.list and then run apt-get update. If you downloaded Lenny rather than Etch, you can use mine (it will produce some errors that are safe to ignore - I'll let you know how to get rid of them later today if needed- and do NOT use my list if you downloaded anything other than Lenny(=testing)):

Here are instructions on installing the nvidia driver (again assuming you downloaded Lenny - the instructions for Etch are somewhat different and you will have to find them yourself): http://home.comcast.net/~andrex/Debi...tallation.html
Well, as much as I would have liked to use Debian, I couldn't get the X server to start! Eventually I gave up an just tried out a Kubuntu disk I have. I installed Kubuntu and everything seems to be working fine. I installed the drivers and I'm now getting direct rendering.
Thanks for all the help! I guess I'll be using Kubuntu a bit more often now.
OK, glad to hear you got one to work. There isn't much of a difference between Debian and Kubuntu (not superficially, at least) so it should be just as good and probably better considering that the Buntus are more willing to reach out to beginners. I'm more of a Gnome guy so I've always used Ubuntu instead of Kubuntu but if you ever want to install Gnome on Kubuntu, that shouldn't be difficult at all. You may want to keep your Knoppix cd because it is really convenient as a repair tool (which is one of its intended uses).
As for the X server issue, I think that would have been quite easy to solve with a little tweaking from the command line - and certainly easier once you have an intalled system that you can use to work from - so if you ever feel you would still like to try Debian too, just post back and we'll see what needs to be done.
