nvidia 6600 ubuntu hardy driver failure mid ut2004

got this graphics card given to me by a friend, it has appeared to get random errors like graphics corruption with the shockrifle blasts on ut2004 nothing else has this just apparently this game. The game also after about 10 minutes of play to half an hour begins causing the screen to go blank for 5-10 sec at a time. the glitches have been around for a while but the blanks are new. i have tried all drivers from 176.x to the latest 186.53. These all cause the same thing. Suspend sometimes fails to resume and takes one of 2 outcomes:
the system will enter hibernation instead of resuming fully.
the system will appear to hang with a blank screen and require a full power off then power on cycle instead of reset otherwise the graphics card will fail to post.

Is this card failing or something?

i have had some sporadic crashes in windows recently too but only on games and with no errors so i cant prove these were related. i'd try another card if i had one but i only have an intel IGP.

Memtest can be a good way to identifiy dodgy hardware attached.

I would use the Ubuntu live CD to boot from and run the memtest for a while - see if you get any errors. If you do, you could try again without the card.
