In a Xfree config, the "nvidia" driver declared is supposed to enable 3D acceleration. Can you load it correctly?

You will need the driver from your video card manufacturer in order to enable 3-D acceleration.

If you use suse, there's a config in yast2 telling whether the 3D is enabled.

In the conffile, the fact that its listed 'nvidia' instead of 'nv' means you are using the nvidia driver. The 'nv' driver is not nvidia's. Its a free software. So, if you have 'nvidia' driver loaded and the X server is ok, 3D is enabled.
Else, you can try to see the nvidia module under lsmod. Mine is there.

You need to remove "load dri" from your xorg.conf file. Check here for NVIDIA configuration options.
