nVidia 10-4496 driver causes segmentation faults in Redhat 9 applications.
System:
OS: Redhat 9.0 / kernel 2.4.20-6 / XFree86 4.3.0-2
CPU: Intel P4 / 2.60cGHz / 800MHz system bus
Board: Intel D865 PERLK / 1GB PC3200 DDR Memory
Discs: WD 120MB UATA 100 Hard drive / Sony CDRW 52-24-52
Graphics: ASUS V9560VS 8xAGP 128MB, using nVidia FX5600
Sound: Creative Audigy 2
Trouble:
Segmentation fault occurs when starting some applications.
OpenOffice and xmms for example. And the applications do not start.
This behaviour began after "successful" installation of nVidia driver:
NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-1.0-4496-pkg2.run
The driver was installed by-the-book according to the README by nVidia.
Made the required changes to XF86Config (XF86Config-4 not present and
not used in Redhat 9.0). No conflicting libraries remain, as far as I can tell.
I use runlevel 3, and startx brings me to a very high quality graphic GUI,
1152x864 at 24bpp. So the nVidia card / driver appear working, and
glxgears shows spinning gears graphic in an Xwindow, at about 3200 fps.
No segmentation faults during pretest with Matrox Mystique card (prior to
nVidia card & driver install). Did something break in XFree86 4.3.0 vs
nVidia's 4.0.2 glx? Is this fixable?
I have "You may not post attachments" status, so I will post my logs at a
later date.
