A recent card will need the kernel driver, firmware, X, and Mesa.

There are a lot of threads where people install old distros and complain that their graphics cards do not work because they are missing one or more of the above.

Right - so 'yes' to my question. But you don't need an RDNA-era card for a functional desktop (the OP says that 3D acceleration is not a big requirement), and given that they're largely unbuyable for many people that's not a viable option either, whereas older cards will still work, and won't require as new of a distro (not that it seems to be a debate here, but just for clarification).

I'm using NVidia cards with openSUSE 15.3 on about 5 different PCs just fine. Nouveau is only needed for KMS services by the kernel. Each kernel comes with a nouveau module that is fully supported.

The nouveau you got the misleading message about is applicable to Xorg and Wayland, which depend on KMS. That message is an unfortunate result of licensing and NVidia policy. Almost certainly it is of no consequence to your PC.

So, we need to know which card you have, and exactly where installation is going wrong. What are you able to do, and what stops you from proceeding, if you have not been able to install an openSUSE 15.3 system.

Have you successfully installed the OS only to find KDE, Gnome, XFCE, Cinnamon, LxQT, Xorg or Wayland functioning poorly, failing to provide support for certain apps? Which apps? If you have an installed system we need information about it:
Code:
cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | susepaste
inxi -GSay
sudo journalctl -b | susepaste
sudo dmesg |susepast
The inxi, Mesa-demo-x and xdpyinfo commands may not be installed. If not, install them with zypper or YaST before copying inxi output and the susepaste URLs here.
OK. Here is what I have for you:

The running system is OpenSUSE Leap 15.2. I installed 15.3 on a separate, new HDD, and had that drive as the only HDD in the system when I was trying to get it going.

Sorry for the delay,

Mark

Neither the nouveau nor the NVidia kernel driver loaded. That's terrible. This forces use of fallback driver FBDEV, which severly limits X functionality.

This line is missing "loaded" following "driver:" and "unloaded" preceding "nouveau". 15.2 ships inxi version 3.1.00, which is broken here. It should read:
Code:
Display: server: X.Org 1.20.3 compositor: kwin_x11 driver: loaded: N/A unloaded: nouveau,nv FAILED: nvidia
Before using inxi again, please run inxi -U to upgrade it to the current version from its author.

The N/As result from either a failed proprietary NVidia driver installation re current kernel, or incomplete removal. First, decide whether to try to fix the NVidia driver, or remove it successfully. To install it, follow the instructions that came with its installation package. I can't give you details, because I never install it.

To remove it, first try to run the NVidia installer in removal mode. Alternatively, remove any files that blacklist nouveau from /etc/modprobe.d/. Next, if /etc/X11/xorg.conf exists, remove it. Also remove any files in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ that affect graphics. Such files might specify use of nvidia driver or specify screen mode among other things not involving input devices or output devices. Next, inspect /etc/default/grub for either nomodeset or nouveau.modeset=0 and if found, remove. Also look for either of those strings in /boot/grub2/grub.cfg. If you find them, remove them. Then run sudo zypper in -f libglvnd. At this point you can try rebooting, but you may need to also rebuild your initrd with dracut -f or mkinitrd and/or run grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub2/grub.cfg before X will work properly with either the nouveau DDX driver (if installed) or the modesetting DIX driver (default, the only driver I used for producing post #18).

Or skip it all, put the new HDD back in, take the old HDD out, and get 15.3 installed on the new HDD before reattaching the old to recover personal data. I can't see anything you've posted here that would prevent successful installation of 15.3.

Easy enough for me to do again. I'll give it another try.

Thank you,

Back in the day the IGP was on-board, now it's on chip. Imaging how many millions you could save by simply omitting the interface between the IGP and the Monitor.

Probably need to buy it separately now, in the form of a PCIe card. Jack the price sky high and force you to pay more after purchase to have the dual graphics we all had "standard" back in the day.
