I just managed to install Slackware 10.1 on my laptop (Medion MD42792) - Linux version 2.4.29 (root@midas) (gcc version 3.3.4) #6 Thu Jan 20 16:30:37 PST 2005.
When doing the install and booting from the install CD, unless I specified 'nousb', the system would hang when probing ISB devices.
Then, after the install and the first boot of the HD using LiLo, the system hung at the hotplug init stage
Finally, I reinstalled (I knew of no other way to get around the hanging - I have no fd0) and set the kernel to boot with 'nousb' and 'nohotplug' options.
However, how do I now go about getting USB devices recognised - and avoiding systems hangs.
If I remove all my USB devices, the system boots. (I did have a 4-port USB hub with some non-typical devices, e.g. Fuji camera and Philips GoGear interfaces).
However, if I plug my Logitech trackball mouse in, that's enough to hang the system at boot - if I plug it in once up and running, the mouse can be used to highlight areas of the console window (I'm not running X yet) so it seems to work (and gpm -T does not return an error message).
Thanks for that - I compiled/installed 2.6.10 and USB works just great. (Alsamixer doesn't, even though I thought I configured it right; another compile tomorrow I guess!)
