Nothing works and no one knows why ?

Well the title should describe Ubuntu in a nutshell at least for me.

I installed Ubuntu 20 two days ago and installed some software I need following all "setup guides" to the point.

Directly I encountered some problems with the "clean install" that I have to say is pure bugs in Ubuntu. but mainly three problems are specially annoying..

1 the "Super key" do not work at all as described. Most likely since I use Swedish Language in my setup and the Swedish keyboard. I have no idea why it do not work in my setup.

2 My printer are not working at all hangs and giving "errors" even that I followed the instructions to the point using Brothers own instructions for Linux Debian setups/files.

3 The built in system for DLNA kind of "works" but drops the connection after exactly 30 minutes of watching a video (Very annoying when doing a presentation on a screen)

------------------------------------------------------------------
Hardware problem 1

Background is that I have not changed ANY of the .cfg files (yet) only installed packages via apt or via the "Store" so everything SHOULD WORK or what ? well it does not and now I turning for some help.

Most important first.. Why the F*CK! don't the printer work ?

The printer is a brand new brother HL-L2350DW plain B/W laser printer.(the canon I had before din not work either in a clean setup so printer setups seems to be a BIG issue with ubuntu. Many friends also have given up in getting ANY printer to work with Ubuntu and might very well be a reason to quit using Ubuntu in all, it just won't work at all.

I will try to explain my install in the freshly installed Ubuntu 20

Downloaded the files from Brother making sure it was the right ones.

(the printer show up before any software where installed but did not respond to any printing from any software so I decided to install the brother supplied files.

I started with the file "linux-brprinter-installer-2.2.2-2.gz" Unpacked it and ran it with "sudo bash linux-brprinter-installer-2.2.2-2"

In the setup dialogue i choose the IP number option that in my case are 192.168.8.120
installing gave the error of "cups NOT INSTALLED" (are cups not installed from the start in a fresh instalment of ubuntu ?) So I went on and installed the "hll2350dwpdrv-4.0.0-1.i386.deb" that suppose to be a driver for the above printer supplied by Brother.

I got a small window referring to the software store clicking on the file and it seemed to install. After that I ran the setup again. And choose "test print" at the end. Surprise. nothing printed.

I Restarted my computer and. Launched Libre office writer and try to print, Nothing.

I get a requester "printer error" Brother HL-L2350DW connecting-to-device error.

Log say "/etc/udev/rules.d/60-brother-libsane-type1-inst.rules:14 Invalid key 'SYSFS'"
priority 3

Pinging the printer at 192.168.8.120 works fine and the printer shows if I log in to the router. Also the printer itself say it's "ready". Printer is only connected by Wi-Fi computer by Ethernet cable in to the local network in my home.

--------------------------

Hardware problem two.. are the playing of video files from a TV set.

Files are all default and I have the base setup directory's "Music,Pictures, video" files I put in there shows up in my DLNA TV set fine and can be started.. If I start a 2hr video it only plays 30 minutes.. after that.. the Computer ikon showing my ubuntu computer vanish If I restart the DLNA on the TV it is there again and I can play another 30 minutes before it all happens again..

To me it looks like there is some kind of timer shutting off perhaps a DHCP lease time for the DLNA. I checked my router and tried playing files from a windows setup and the problem are only happening when I use the UBUNTU setup. I also tried to play files from my routers DLNA built in system and that also works fine so it HAVE to be something with the server in UBUNTU that is causing this 30 minutes shut down problem. Or is the media server restricted to only 30 minutes displaying by the author ? I belive the "Rygel" software is a part of the media server but when looking at the .cfg file I do not find any thing that looks like a time limit of any kind exept for the show picture 15 seconds thing..

I would really appreciate some guiding on how to resolve my problems, and I am quite surprised that this pretty much basic things don't work in an fresh setup, where no configuration files have been "Messed with" only following the on screen installation advices.

I do use a VPN and of course I tested all of this without the VPN on (local network are whitelisted in the VPN service also)
And that's the printer problems.

I also would like tips on how to trace my problems and what software files are affecting the printer and video problems I have. I have tried to monitor happenings through the system monitor and from "logs" but don't get much info that way.

I think you have to install cups (the Common Unix Printing System) separately after installing the distro. Use
Code:
sudo apt install cups
Then try your Brother script again. I can't help you on the other point.

You should be able to add the printer and set it as default in the system settings. Find Printers and follow the Ubuntu docs here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Ne...tingWithUbuntu

With luck it will be automatically discovered. If not, you can give the IP and try IPP protocol to print the test page.

If you are using Gnome, the Super key should display the "activities overview", whatever that might be. Is that what you want it to do? Have you checked that it is functioning as a Super by using xev?

That's not the problem here. It sounds more like you need to try a better distro than Ubuntu.

Ubuntu is perfectly fine. Plenty of people use it with zero problems. I'm curious about these "guides" you followed. There is so much out of date information out there you have to be real careful using them as published. You shouldn't need guides for most software installation. I'm also curious about your source for the iso. As released Ubuntu direct from Canonical rarely has problems.

In regards to the printer if it says you need cups then you need it. It was likely in the manual and you missed it. It happens.

Code:
"/etc/udev/rules.d/60-brother-libsane-type1-inst.rules:14 Invalid key 'SYSFS'"

This means their install script is busted likely. Their driver installer put that there. Nothing to do with Ubuntu. Canonical doesn't supply that stuff. From my experience Brother printers have always been a problem in Linux of any kind. HP has worked first time every time for me. YMMV.

I'm not even sure what this means. What built in DLNA? Is this an official image?

Maybe.. If you don't care about hardware support, don't mind a clunky GUI and want to do everything the Ubuntu way (which might prevent you from getting things done). I've personally heard several success stories of people moving from Ubuntu to Mint and finding familiarity yet better hardware support and more gnuness, linuxness and unixness.

Changing the distribution is a pointless tangent. The OP will likely encounter all the same problems.

Your idea of broken script seems to be it. I downloaded the printer installation script from another site (UK instead of Sweden) And there was som difference in result. The UK script generated an "uninstall script" (Swedish version NOT)
It resulted in 4!? printer icons in the settings section. After deleting de inactive ones (3 of them) I restarted and Ubuntu added a new one that still did not work. but the one I left from the installation seems to work even after a reboot. So for now the Printer problem seems to be solved.
The version at the UK site worked a little bit different than the Script at the Swedisk site.

Still have a problem with the DLNA thou but got a bit further in my investigation.

The ubuntu media streaming function is handled by "Rygel"
For some reason Rygel starts a cron task that is shutting the system down after 30 minutes.
I also noticed that Rygel are trying to contact a site at: 239.255.255.250 but can not.
Rygel tries this for about 40 times and then starts a cron timer that is shutting down the link between TV and computer. Atleast that is what I believe right now looking through the logs.

So I have to find a solution on why Rygel try to contact 239.255.255.250 and Why no contact with that site results in a drop in connection between TV and Ubuntu computer. It was a bit hard to find info about the IP 239.255.255.250 Whois did not give much information. But it probably are some reserved address for video use ? The error I have in my logs are "error sending SSDP package to 239.255.255.250" generated by the Rygel software that comes with Ubuntu.

Thank you all for the reply's to my problems.

Maybe, but it seems some of his struggles and frustrations are related to the clunky "ubuntu way" of doing things. Anyways, as he said, it is a fresh install, so trying another distro like Mint shouldn't be too problematic.

At the moment either left or right "super key" do anything. If I use the option "Hot corner" I can get to the "activities overview"
I did test this on a laptop using a default keyboard and language setting Then it works as decribed but after installing a swedish keymap it quits functioning. The left and right "superkeys" have no function at all in a Swedish keyboard and it should not be any problems to add this key to the keymap layout by default. I tested the combinations including "superkey" and no one of them works as it say in "keyboard shortcuts" It's just a dead key in my keyboard.

Try the command
Code:
setxkbmap -print
and the output should include a line starting
Code:
xkb_symbols {include "pc+se
Does it? The "pc" bit refers to a file called /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/pc which should contain the lines
Code:
key <LWIN> {[Super_L]};
key <RWIN> {[Super_R]};
