I'm using a TSSTcorp CD/DVDW TS-H652L 0603 drive under Debian stable. I put in a Verbatim DVD-Recordable DVD, and it read it as blank. However, I had put in a Fujifilm DVD-RW, and it wouldn't read under Debian stable.
How do I get it to work? The Fujifilm DVD-RW has the most recent Debian Live distro on it. It wouldn't boot during BIOS startup. I don't know if the issue is my drive, the BIOS, or the discs that I'm using.

I found these webpages, but I don't know how to flash the firmware with a .exe from inside of Debian.

update:
I extracted the .exe in Linux, burned the .iso file from the .exe onto the Verbatim DVD, and installed the firmware. The firmware installed, but I am unable to use the DVD-R now to re-record onto. And the DVD burner/player is not using the fujifilm. This may be a drive issue, I believe.
