Non-USB Sidewinder gamepad

Does anyone know which kernel modules need to be loaded for a Sidewinder gamepad to work?

I compiled the 2.4.20 kernel myself (as always) and included the following modules relating to joysticks : emu10k1-gp.o, gameport.o, and sidewinder.o.

I have no problem loading them, but xmame reports that there is no device attached to /dev/js0. Anyone know what I'm missing here?
