No X display when using nvidia drivers on Geforce FX 5900

This is driving me up the wall.

If I use the nvidia drivers I get a mess at the bottom of the screen, yet if I use the nv drivers it works. this is on the vga connection. If I use the DVI connection I get "Input signal out of range" with the nvidia drivers.
My screen is a 17" LCD Monitor

Help me!

what does XFree86 log say should be located in /var/log
