No volume control elements and/or devices found

Yet another newbie trying to get some sound on his Linux.
I've been reading about this for a while and still couldn't find the answer. Might be because I'm a complete newbie, trying his way in the Linux family.

I have installed a GNOME desktop Fedora 4 on a PC. Coulnd't get sound at all.
I've upgraded all stuff with the up2date ustility (so windowish of me, I know)
managed to update ALSA so that my sound card is now detected (and very proud of myself for managing that)
The sound card itself is an VIA Tech on board AC97 sound (Via82xx)

But still, when I boot or just try the volume control, I get the annoying No volume control elements and/or devices found error and trying to run Totem returns Alsa device "default" does not exist. When I try the 'Play test sound' in the Soundcard Detection utility I just hear no sound.

modinfo soundcore output is:
filename: /lib/modules/2.6.14-1.1653_FC4/kernel/sound/soundcore.ko

Any more info I can give you? Please help a newbie.

Thanks a lot!

Not sure which way to go from here. Lets get some more info.
Output of the following commands
/sbin/lsmod
cat /proc/pci
cat /proc/interrupts

Is this a notebook or desktop machine?

Lets go from there.

You could try running 'alsaconf' to configure up the card. It may be that you have just not configured it yet, therefore Linux doesn't have any configuration information:

run alsaconf to configure
run alsamixer to adjust sound

This is done at a console/shell.

need a driver for your modem?

Hi Karnaf,

I see that you have an ESS modem according to your lspci output. Do you need a driver for it? I have recently built one for 2.6 series kernels and am looking for beta testers.

Regards,
Jeff
