No video from mplayer/xine/vlc with HDMI connection
I just plugged in my new monitor using a HDMI cable. Display is perfect everywhere except in video players. Flash video worksfine. I guess there's some overlay setting that needs to be changed?

VLC plays some bizarre 'ASCII art' thing instead of video files. Other players give me audio but no picture.

TVTime is the same - sound but no image

Also, there is no sound via HDMI from the screen but that's a secondary issue.

What video output driver are you using for the players? You can see a list of what is available from mplayer with the command:

Code:

mplayer -vo help
The slightly less than scientific approach would be to simply try different video output drivers until you get a picture.

I tried XV and X11. I'm confused as to how the cable type affects the display of the video output - it's almost as if the monitor is being considered as a different Display number with the HDMI conenction.

It suddenly started working after a reboot. Praise be.
