No usb mouse after hotplug loaded (acpi also has to do with it)

Hi,
I installed Ubuntu Hoary (tried Ubuntu Warty too , also doesn't work anyway) on my laptop (compaq presario r3358 )...
Standard install, i plug in my usb mouse... the red light from the mouse lights up.. till the boot process starts hotplug... then the red light suddenly goes off... plug in after boot, also no light... dmesg shows no activity, not even a sign of something connected in a usb bus....

What could be wrong here? Also the live cd doesn't pick my mouse up... The touchpad works in any other case though...

I also later found out that when i give grub the option acpi=off, the mouse does work, but then the touchpad doesn't work... also i get no battery status and processor speed and that kind off stuff, since acpi is turned off

Is there any way around this?? No normal mouse is annoying.. hehe... so help me well ya?

TIA,
Erik

First trouble shoot.

go to a plain old terminal (not in X)
unplug the mouse.
then plug the mouse in again (after about 5 seconds)

the hotplug device should dump messages to the console (/dev/stdout)
pertaining to your unplugging and pluggin in the device.

if that doesn't work then you don't have the proper kernel drivers loaded.

go through the kernel setup again and check the USB interface stuff.

and another good command to use is 'dmesg'
this command will tell you about devices and device errors.

don't forget to read read read

Hmm, the usb modules in the kernel are OK, i'm convinced off that... it's the standard ubuntu kernel...

But, dmesg doesn't print anything when i plug in the mouse... also the light in the mouse doesn't go on (i think it doesn't even get power)
