No Sync with Trident ProVidia 9685 SuSE 8.2

I am using a Jaton graphic card with a Trident ProVidia 9685 chipset with my new installation of SuSE 8.2. Yast2 displays the correct information when it finds the card (confirmed in /etc/X11/XF86Config), but sync is lost when X windows starts.
The card is used in a dual boot system and is fine under Windows 2000 and NT. It's also fine for the generic setup for system load and booting.
I have swapped the card out with an S3virge from another system and that works with a change of driver, so the basic setup is OK. Just seems that the driver has a problem.
Has anyone else had a similar experience or is there a way of using the generic driver used during the boot process to get this system up and running?
Thanks.

Yep, Tridents are just mucky cheap cards and they were never forthcoming much with XFree so the drivers aren't that hot. If the chipset is newer you can change the video driver in /etc/X11/XF86Config from "Trident" to "vesa" and it should work fine, although I would be careful to put it in a pretty low video mode, like 1024x768 at 16-bit is the most you could expect.

Cheers,

Finegan,
Thanks for the suggestion. The 'vesa' driver change in /etc/X11/XF86Config did the trick.
Best regards,
