No sound with Intel ICH5 on SuSE 10.0

Hello, everybody. I have a question that's been bugging me for days now, and I wanted to know if anybody has the answer or a similar problem. I'm a complete newbbie here, so be gentle with me...

I can't get my computer to reproduce any kind of sounds (other than system beep). I have an Intel 82801EB/ER (ICH5/ICH5R) chipset, and I'm trying to get it to work on SuSE 10.0. When I go to the sound configuration in Yast, I find that two sound cards. One of them just says "Sound Card", has no number, trying to edit it results in Yast closing down, and doesn't allow me to delete it. The other one corresponds to my 82801EB/ER (ICH5/ICH5R), says that it's not configured and when trying to install it automatically I get an error that says something like "the kernel module snd-intel8x0 for sound support could not be loaded".

Running alsaconf did no good, I don't hear anything at the end of what otherwise seems like smooth running.

running alsamixer results in "function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such device"

I get the impression that a first step towards a solution would be to get that unfriendly unwanted soundcard to dissapear from my Yast panel, but I'm completely uneducated on what I could do from a terminal. I'm a GUI sissy. If anybody has some tips, I'd be most grateful. I say goodbye by including the output of /sbin/lspci. Best wishes,

Tariuk

Have you considered an upgrade to Suse 10.2. I did a Google and it had a lot of listings for " suse 10.0 sound ac97 " and I didn't see any easy solutions. I just ran across where someone unmuted their headphone and the speakers started working. Be worth a try.

Yeah, re-installing would be the most reasonable solution, but I already have a lot of software working, but might be what I eventually will need to do, with the unjustified hope that it will work afterwards. Can't upgrade to 10.2 because my computer is part of a cluster, and the admin doesn't like the idea of different versions going around. Of course, I tried fiddling with all the volumes and channels. The problem seems to be mostly that I can't install the sound device, because some other inexistent sound card is already installed (maybe taking up the IRQ), and I can't remove it. Thanks for your answer! Cheers!
