No sound whatsoever

I've freshly installed Slack 9.1 and I'm receiving absolutely ZERO output; I don't hear anything.

e.g: Quake 3, ET, XMMS, etc.

I'm sure this should involve a bit of configuring, but I need someone to start me off. Of course, I'd
appreciate anyone's help.

first try alsaconf from a terminal, if this works and you are able to configure your card, then issue

alsamixer, unmute volume, set default levels, then issue

alsactl store, to save settings accross a reboot. if any of the above fail, the post the output of

/sbin/lspci -v

if the sound card doesn't show up in the output of that then try issuing

pnpdump

to see if there are any isa devices, hope something here helps.
good luck.

here is your sound card on the pci bus

00:11.5 Multimedia audio controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8233 AC97 Audio Controller (rev 50)
Subsystem: Asustek Computer, Inc.: Unknown device 80a1
Flags: medium devsel, IRQ 3
I/O ports at e000 [size=256]
Capabilities: [c0] Power Management version 2

so the pnpdump wasn't need just wanted to give you some options, just in case. so the alsaconf failed? if it did, then use pkgtool to uninstall the alsa packages, then have a look here

http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-doc...module=via82xx

download the latest alsa package and install it. then the instructions from the first post i made should get you going.
good luck.
