No sound output- Mess with /dev/sndstat?

Hello all,
I am getting no sound output from either cd-rom drive or from mp3's. I have been getting a sound server message telling me the output device cannot be found. Is this just solved by finding an appropriate device driver, or do I have to mess with /dev/sndstat? If so, any suggestions what to do and how to do it?

Thanks!

I dont know my sound server - how can I find that out?
The sound card I have is a Yamaha OPL-3 SAx, and it works fine under Windows XP.
I'm using RedHat Linux 2.4, and KDE.
