No sound output- Mess with /dev/sndstat?

Hello all,
I am getting no sound output from either cd-rom drive or from mp3's. I have been getting a sound server message telling me the output device cannot be found. Is this just solved by finding an appropriate device driver, or do I have to mess with /dev/sndstat? If so, any suggestions what to do and how to do it?

Thanks!

does your user have proper permissions to access these devices......../dev/mixer and /dev/dsp.........??
what sound card do you have?
if it's SB live have you installed the emu10k1 driver and emu-tools
you can get these from sourceforge website here........
http://sourceforge.net/projects/emu10k1
