Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

No sound on Samsung laptop

I recently picked up an old Samsung Sens R45. This is a Korean machine with a hangul keyboard, and it originally ran a Korean version of Windows that I had no login for. I installed Lubuntu 11.10 on the machine to get it working. I don't know whether there is a hardware problem with the sound system, or whether the drivers are simply not configured right, but I don't get any sound from the speakers or headphone jack. I've turned up all of the volume controls and upgraded all my packages, but to no avail.

Here is the output of the alsa info script:

The info is too long to post here.

I'd really appreciate any help you can offer on this. I'm an experienced Linux user but I have no clue how to troubleshoot sound issues.

It is probably something in the sound options picking the wrong output, i had same issue before, it is a simple thing that often happen with Ubuntu and variants. Under Sound preferences look for output, select your sound card and check/verify also the connector, check/verify the input as well just in case.

Regards

If you don't come right with finding the correct configuration, try a few different distros. Some distros work better out-of-the-box with a particular hardware than others.
