No sound on my on-board sound using Mandrake 10.0

I have just started using linux and I have always used M$ Windows before now so please go easy on me. I have an on-board sound card with my PC and I can't get any sound what so ever.

In the control centre it says that it has the card and it thinks that it is all configured but still no sound. Here is what the screen says:

Code:
Vendor: Intel Corporation

Alternative drivers: snd-intel8x0

Bus: PCI

Bus identification: 8086:2445:414c:4710

Location on the bus: 0:1f:5

Description: ICH2 810 Chipset AC'97 Audio Controller

Module: i810_audio

Media class: MULTIMEDIA_AUDIO
Is there any hope for me?

Thanks

Rich

For some reason, by default, Mandrake comes up with all sound muted. You might be able to just run "aumix" and set your output sound volume to some value > 0.

Make sure sound isn't muted. IIRC, there is a dropdown on the menu bar that shows "Mute", with a checkbox beside it. uncheck that box, and see if it works. (I am not *sure* about KMix - this might have been in aumix....)

I found out what the problem was in the end. I have a web cam that has a mic on it and it was trying to use that sound driver to output the sound. I have unpluged it and will figure a way of getting it to work later.

Thanks

I managed to get the sound working in the media player but I can't get the sound to play else where. I can watch a video but I can get sound on Kopete or Mandrake itself? I was reading another post and put a command into the konsole but I can't remeber what. It said something about "xmms-alsa". Installing it i think. Any ideas?

Thanks

Rich
