No sound in Red hat 8.0
Hello frineds i have a mercuy NDMx mother board with
onboard Via83xx(this is what shown when my sound card is configured in red hat 9.0)
souncard, the thing is that i had installed Red hat 9.0 and it automatically detected the sound card drivers but as my system was slow, so i was unable to continue with it. Now i have installed REd hat 8.0 its pretty fast the problem is that now my sound card is detected but i hear so sound, What can be the possible problem,
Please tell me how to configure my sound card,
I have tried the sndconfig command by logging as root but it tells me that "command not found", why am i getting such an error message. Like i can set up the graphics card for me isnst there any way to set my sound card as well, if there is a gui tool, that would be much more helpful because i am not very used to the commands..... which are to be used during the configuration..
Please guys i really want to set the linux up..and Booming... please help....
Regards tonan

No sound in X?
I'm thinking you're getting no sound in KDE or GNOME, or whatever window manager you're using for X11, no? First thing to check is if you have the sound server started, esd for GNOME, kmod for KDE. If you got those in there, run over to www.alsa-project.org and look up how to enable kmod support for your soundcard. It also wouldn't hurt to check if the mixer settings are up.

Are you sure the volume is turned up? Try running aumix at the command line and adjust the volume using the arrow keys...

With due respected ehawk, i am a newbie alright but this is the first thing that one would do to check the sound output, well i also have an err which i have seen lately that "unable to start sound server" why would i see such a kind of message when i am having my sound card detected.
Once again i am restating that i am using Red hat 8.0. My card name is displayed when i am selecting the option "cofigure sound card in the GNOME" is there any other way to select other sound card in Red hat 8.0. I would be very glad if anyone could please help on this.
