No sound in Mandrake Linux

I have a SoundBlaster Live 5.1 card and I can't get any sound in Mandrake Linux 9.1. I've checked to make sure it's off of mute and I'm running an Alsa driver but I still can't get it to work. Someone told me to try typing in some code (this is just part of it):

cd /usr/src/linux
make menuconfig

I tried this but kept getting no such file or directory even when I logged in as root it gave me this message. Any other ideas or suggestions? I'm pretty new to Linux and need some help...thanks!

Try going to kde Control Center and switching between OSS and ALSA sound under sound ->server config?. I did a few things before I got sound to load by itself though. Got upgraded version of ALSA. Reloaded ALSA from Mandrake disks. played with the alsa config file. Eventually I got the OSS module from ALSA to load automatically but the ALSA module sounds better so I have to modprobe it in.
