no sound in alsa

Hi,

I have a NVidia motherboard with Real ech card.. When I installed the oss drivers (4-front trechnologies), it was working fine, but, it had some problem with sound recording...

Hence I tried to fix that with alsa.. but, unfortunately, i cant get alsa to even identify the card. But, the recent version was able to do that. However, it told some problem with undefined blah blah blah... I read in a thread that kernel version more than 2.6.14 can natively support that sound card. Hence, I installed kernel 2.6.16.15 and compiled alsa within the kernel (not as a module).

Now, when i rebooted with the new kernel, as per the information, everything is fine. Alsa mixer is showing all the controls, and the name of the card correctly after i ran alsaconf.
But, what ever thing i do, i cant get the sound out in the speakers... I used audacity and tried recording. I can see some signals popping up when i speak some thing in the microphone... The wierd thing is that, even when i mute the mic in alsamixer, audacity keeps showing the signals corresponding to my speech. Can anyone let me know what is the problem? I badly need the sound card to be functioning well, as i use a lot of skype

This is the output i got when i tried to play an MP3 with mplayer

Code:
Checking audio filter chain for 44100Hz/2ch/s16le -> 44100Hz/2ch/s16le...
AF_pre: 44100Hz/2ch/s16le
alsa-init: 1 soundcard found, using: default
ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:1109:(_snd_pcm_dmix_open) Unknown field ipc_gid
alsa-init: playback open error: Invalid argument
Could not open/initialize audio device -> no sound.
Audio: no sound
Video: no video
Thanks,
Shyam

I installed the NVidia graphics driver, and now, mplayer is functioning well with alsa. However, the volume is too low... All volumes are at max when i checked with the alsamixer. Any idea how to increase the system volume?
