Just a thought, but check that your kernel or modules have support for your sound card. Then try alsamixer (from a terminal) without X running, followed by alsa store, also from a terminal. This latter will save the settings set in alsamixer. At a guess you probably have an onboard sound card, like an AC97, and have started Slackware with the bare kernel.
I am also running Slackware 10, and haven't yet gotten around to getting the sound running in Slackware, but it works fine in Mandrake and SuSe.

So we have the same problem. When I get time to get it running, I'll post how I did it, but that may be a few days yet, as my time is a bit limited these days. But I suspect it's tied up with booting from the "bare" kernel.
Interestingly, the "Live CD" of Slackware autoconfigures the sound card and everything works. I've tried copying the alsaconf file from the Live CD to the hard drive, but this doesn't work either. Hence my suspicion that it's tied up with the bare kernel.

yeateg, i have solve my problem. but i don't really know which command did it. i tried everything about what i read in forums and i didn't touch the kernel or modules. but the problem is that the sound quality is not good and i have to max out the volume of the speaker to have a little sound.
i also don't have much spare time to read. that's why even if i had been using slackware for about a month now, i'm still not very familiar with my linux.
i'll be waiting for your post if you had found a good solution for it. thanks, btw.

Interesting. The sound from the Live CD Slackware nearly blasts me out of the chair. So I'll be looking at the difference between what the Live CD loads and configures and comparing that with the existing setup. The solution when found will probably turn out to be very simple.

i have asked a slackware user from chat about this problem and he said that he has no problem with sound. he said we might try to consider to download the latest kernel. i think 2.6. slackware 10 comes with 2.4. i will try to patch my kernel but i have to read first, my system might crashed. never tried touching the kernel yet.
btw, i have also downloaded slax. i didn't work for me. i can't use x window. it says that "no screen found" or something like that.

Yes, that will be the solution for me too, as I can't get full video use out of current kernel. I wasn't too worried about sound, but would like the extra resolution the video card can do in Windows.
I had got as far as downloading the sources for 2.6.6, but haven't had the time to go further. May have some free time on Friday, so will tell you if it works ok.
